Four Critics’ Perspective of Theodore Roethkes Elegy for Jane More than forty years after her untimely death, Jane Bannick breathes again--or so it seems while reading about her. Janes unfortunate death in an equestrian accident prompted one of her professors, the poet Theodore Roethke, to write a moving poem, Elegy for Jane, recalling his young student and his feelings of grief at her loss. Opinions appeared almost as soon as Roethkes tribute to Jane, and passages about the poem continue to appear in articles and books. Recent writings by Parini, Ross-Bryant, Kalaidjian, and Stiffler disclose current assessments. My sparrow, you are not here, Waiting like a fern, making a spiny shadow. The sides of wet stones cannot console me, Nor the moss, wound with the last light (14-17). In the final stanza, Roethke again addresses Jane in the terms of non human endearment as my skittery pigeon (19), but his final expression of loss comes in terms of a unique human relationship: neither father nor lover. Roethke succeeds in capturing an individual person, his feelings for her, and his sense of loss at her death. This poem, one of the best of the few poems in which Roethke tried to capture an individual, according to Ross-Bryant, owes its success to Janes association with nature and the final statement of the poets love (74-75.) According to Kalaidjian, the poem follows patterns used by Walt Whitman and D. H. Lawrence. Roethke follows their patterns of enumerative catalogues in triadic structures or patterns marked by three elements or grammatical forms (23). Answer: Image one The image of Real.lives.matter shows an individual trapped in the world of social media and seeking a breakthrough in having control over actual life events. Notably, these social media platforms have tendencies of overpowering people in positioning and establishing their place in the society as they lose focus on the most important aspects of life. Social media has a degree of control over the lives of individuals and this has been manifested by the enactment of laws to assist in the subsidizing of the effects associated with media influence. The police have been pointed out as the main influence in social media law enforcement strategies and how they purpose in fighting crime related activities through the social media. Humanity is lost and chained in the digital unreal world thanks to the frequent technological advancements in interaction platforms each and every day of our lives. The Effects Used I have employed the use of photoshop in the pictures in correctly positioning the logos of social media applications on the police men, and I have also used the effect of duplication. I have also correctly positioned the police uniforms and successfully cut the faces of the policemen using quick selection tool to help in reducing their size. In the background of the image is a focal point of the hands and policemen with a white color effect achieved through decreasing opacity. The person chained in the image seeks to venture into the real world, but the influence of the social media platforms provide hindrances in accessing the normal life. Symbolically, the image of the three cops with and a man in chains carrying a phone shows the inhumane treatment of the black people and how their rights are expressly violated. Additionally, the title of the image (Real.lives.matter) is written in a white font and the layer brought in front, with a white bar behind the words. This has been achieved by using the rectangle tool to facilitate writing and the opacity of the black bar has been lowered. Therefore, the slogan REAL.LIVES.MATTER shows how individuals want to break out or not be used by social media and have control over their ideal world. Ethical Issues in My Image Working I consider my work with high regards and as such ethical issues associated with it come up in the form of creativity, ownership, representation, service and nature of profits. Notably, these are usually confused with the new technologies application which is heightened by preferences in cultures, the personality of an individual, ambitions, and political affiliations (Wiles, Coffey, Robinson and Heath, 2012). Image two This second image shows a young girl trapped in a cage, in an unreal world, making her lose connection to her social life at large, to her friends. The dark cage is symbolic to the dark world she is trapped in due to her commitment to the use of social media interaction platforms in the form of twitter (Aaron, 2016). The conceptual idea in the image displayed above is how the use of twitter has distracted individuals from the ideal world and making them embrace the digital space. This is supported by the fact that the lady is trapped in a cage that she cannot escape from as she is a slave to technology and the friends symbolically laugh at her separation from the social life. The Effects Used I have used contrast in making the inside of the cage dark to help in enhancing symbolism and the girls photo has been brought to the middle as a second layer. The image has been layered behind and cropped into a smaller position to make it fit into the cage. The eraser tool has been used to blur the background image that is unwanted and the square selection tool utilized in getting rid of the cage bars. The bars have been removed to make the girl seemingly look inside the cage, and additionally the edges have been softened and added depth by using emboss and bevel. The background has been resized to fit the images by bringing the layer to the extreme back, and the girl and cage to the bottom right hand corner of the image. The inside of the cage has been colored with paint brush tool and the magic eraser tool used in getting rid of the white background. Additionally, the smoothness of the image has been adjusted to feather type and the selection tool has been used in pasting people in the background. There is resizing of the people to a smaller fit to make them look like they are on the grass, with a layer of white background on top of the park. The opacity has been decreased to make the background light and the resized twitter icon placed on top of the cage, and proportionally layered at the front. There are more twitter icons around the girl in the cage who seems to be tweeting to the whole world, but in the real sense taking to herself. Images and Copyright Laws Generally, when an image is developed, the designer owns the copyrights to that image unless it is made for hire. A work made for hire is as a result of a designer hired to take photographs for a person or is told to provide an image for compilations and signing of a written agreement. The images I made will be used online and registration with the copyright office of United States of America is compulsory, and when not done in time, I still retain the copyright rights of the image. Why Was Manifest Destiny a Significant Component in the Making of America free essay sample

O’Sullivan’s original conception of Manifest Destiny was not a call for territorial expansion by force. He believed that the expansion of the United States would happen without the direction of the U. S. government or the involvement of the military. O’Sullivan did not originate the idea of Manifest Destiny, while his phrase provided a useful label for ideas which had become particularly popular during the 1840s, the ideas themselves were not new. Ideas from manifest destiny were emphasized in the Monroe Doctrine, and also the colonial times as Americans tried to break away from their mother country. The Monroe Doctrine of 1822 stated that Britain couldn’t settle anywhere in the western hemisphere, hence the reason why America wanted to place keeps on the land around them. The ideas were also developed in colonial times when the colonists were trying to break free from Britain, and the revolution added the sense of nationalism that this concept illustrated. John L. O’Sullivan’s exert from his article definlitley opened the idea to Americans more so than ever. It became the leading light for westward expansion and during this period in history thousands of people packed up their families and belongings and moved west to new territories to gain land and to make a fortune. The term Manifest Destiny conveyed the idea that the rightful destiny of the US included imperialistic expansion. In 1836, the Republic of Texas declared independence from Mexico and, after the Texas Revolution, sought to join the United States as a new state. The annexation of Texas became a big deal, and with the idea of nationalism and the Americans â€Å"destiny† they were able to accomplish annexation, but Mexico refused to see them as independent. The annexation of Texas was controversial, however, since it would add another slave state to the Union. Presidents Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren declined Texas’s offer to join the United States in part because the slavery issue threatened to divide the Democratic Party. Although elected by a very slim margin, Polk proceeded as if his victory had been a mandate for expansion. As he came to office congress had already approved the annexation of the area of Texas. Polk decided to occupy a portion of Texas which was also claimed by Mexico, paving the way for the outbreak of the Mexican-American War on April 24, 1846. After success on the battlefield some Americans came up with the idea â€Å"All Mexico† to try and annex all of Mexico into the country because it would ensure future peace in the region. This led to controversy because the argument was very two-sided. Many Americans were racist and didn’t want any non-Anglo Saxon people apart of their country, but also because it forced a whole country to be a part of the U. S. which imposed their will as people. The controversy was eventually ended by the Mexican Cession, which added the territories of California and New Mexico to the United States, both more sparsely populated than the rest of Mexico. Manifest Destiny played its most important role in the Oregon boundary dispute with Great Britain. The Anglo-American Convention of 1818 had provided for the joint occupation of the Oregon Country, and thousands of Americans migrated there in the 1840s over the Oregon Trail. The vast majority of men and women who crossed the continent on the Oregon Trail in the mid-1800s did so for personal reasons. They were looking for a less crowded and more fertile place to farm, or they planned to make money selling trade goods. . Americans settled in Oregon Country as early as 1831 with their wagons and pride they traveled two thousand miles through prairie, desert, and mountain terrain just to reach this new land. They developed this sense that the land there had a better hope, so many dropped everything they had to start a future in the Oregon Country. The idea of manifest destiny played a huge role in the 1844 election, James K. Polk vs. Henry Clay. The democratic candidate, James Polk, favored expansion he wanted to add California, New Mexico, Texas, and Oregon to the United States. Oregon was a big issue during his campaign. During this time the United States shared occupation of Oregon with Great Britain. In his campaign, Polk pushed for taking over all of this territory with his slogan â€Å"Fifty-four forty or fight! †, â€Å"Reoccupation of Oregon! † â€Å"All the way to the 54’40! †(2) Instead of fighting for the territory, he settled for half. After Polk was elected President in 1844 the boundary between British Canada and the United States was permanently extended along the 49th parallel all the way to the Pacific Coast. This election definitely contributed to the democratic institutions of manifest destiny and how the idea not only appealed to the people but politics too. Americans settled in Oregon Country as early as 1831 with their wagons and pride they traveled two thousand miles through prairie, desert, and mountain terrain just to reach this new land. They certainly had manifest destiny on their minds while traveling that great distance. Around the same time a man by the name of John Fremont decided to lead an expedition into the area of California to survey the land. He was sent to map the west coast for the U. S. army, but he was accused of encouraging American settlers to revolt against the Mexican citizens so he was told to leave the territory. Four days before the United States declared war on Mexico, Fremont received information that the Mexican military commander was going to order all American settlers to leave California, so he went back to California to let the American settlers know. On June 14, a group of twenty men moved on Sonoma, captured General Vallejo and declared California a republic with the raising of the Bear Flag, hence the name of the Bear Flag revolt. When U. S. forces arrived in early July, Fremont organized the Bear Flag revolters into a military-like group and worked to complete the conquest of California. On January 13, 1847, Fremont received the final surrender of the Californios(descendants of the Spanish and Mexican conquerors who had once ruled California) with the signing of the Treaty of Cahuenga. Fremonts activities in California were the expression of the idea of Manifest Destiny. Through his explorations and reports, he helped the U. S. develop interest in settling the West. By encouraging settlers to revolt against the Mexican authorities, Fremont sought to pave the way for the annexation of California by the United States, and amped up the drive of the Americans to settle the west. After the Mexican-American War ended in 1848, many expansionists decided to take it upon themselves to look for more land to settle and call theirs. Without official government support, the most extreme advocates of Manifest Destiny increasingly turned to military filibustering. Filibustering was the act of a person who engages in a private military action in a foreign country. Though illegal, the filibustering operations in the late 1840s and early 1850s were emphasized by the U. S. press, and became very important to Polk. The United States had long been interested in acquiring Cuba from the declining Spanish Empire. As with Texas, Oregon, and California, American policy makers were concerned that Cuba would fall into British hands, which would cause a threat to the interests of the United States. Polk was interested but his attempts at getting the island of Cuba failed. Filibusters like William Walker continued to catch headlines in the late 1850s, but with the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1860 the idea of expansion began to focus on that dealing with the north and south. Expansionism was among the various issues that played a role in the coming of the war, but it had to do with the slavery. As the Civil War came to a close and reconstruction took its toll, along with the close of the frontier Americans became land hungry for places outside of the United States. America tried to gain land in Venezuela, Cuba, Chile, Puerto Rico and the Philippine Islands. America also had already purchased Alaska from Russia and was able to acquire Hawaii as well. In 1898, after the sinking of the USS Maine in the harbor at Havana, Cuba, the United States ntervened on the side of the Cubans who were fighting the Spanish Empire, beginning the Spanish–American War. Although advocates of Manifest Destiny in the 1840s had called for the annexation of Cuba, the Teller Amendment, passed by the U. S. Senate before the war, proclaimed Cuba free and independent and disclaimed any U. S. intention to annex the island. After the war, the Platt Amendment (1902) established C uba as a future colony of the United States. Unlike Cuba, the United States did annex Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines after the war with Spain. The acquisition of these islands marked a new chapter in U. S. history. Traditionally, territories were acquired by the United States inside of the borders but now they’ve acquired land outside expanding further than just west. Although the idea of Manifest Destiny died down a bit after the 19th century some Americans tried to continue the slogan throughout history. People like Woodrow Wilson, attempted to redefine both Manifest Destiny and Americas mission on a broader, worldwide scale. Wilson led the United States into World War I with the argument that The world must be made safe for democracy. (3) In his 1920 message to Congress after the war, Wilson stated: â€Å"I think we all realize that the day has come when Democracy is being put upon its final test. The Old World is just now suffering from a wanton rejection of the principle of democracy and a substitution of the principle of autocracy as asserted in the name, but without the authority and sanction, of the multitud e. This is the time of all others when Democracy should prove its purity and its spiritual power to prevail. It is surely the manifest destiny of the United States to lead in the attempt to make this spirit prevail. (4)Wilson wanted the American people to realize how much manifest destiny affected them as a whole but also the democratic institutions involved with the concept as well. To some, Manifest Destiny was based on the idea that America had a divine providence. It had a future that was destined by God to expand its borders, with no limit to area or country. All the traveling and expansion were part of the spirit of Manifest Destiny, a belief that it was Gods will that Americans spread over the entire continent, and to control and populate the country as they see it. Many expansionists conceived God as having the power to sustain and guide human destiny. It was white mans burden to conquer and Christianize the land (5), meaning its affiliation with God gave people the notion to do so. For example, the idea that the Puritan notion of establishing a city on a hill(6) was eventually turned into Manifest Destiny, a religious destiny. These concepts contributed to the big bowl of ideas created by manifest destiny. There is much debate on whether Manifest Destiny played an important role in American history and whether it actually helped America or made matters worse. Some objections to the idea could be the treatment of Indians, and other native people to an area America tried to acquire, but also the amped up egotistical and self-interested attitude it gave many Americans. For example, during the settling of the frontier Indians were treated very badly. They were forced out of their original land and place in Indian reserves, under the Indian Removal Act. The Americans treated the Indians as if they were of lesser value than them. They massacred villages, killed many men, women, and children, and lied to the Indians just to acquire their land. Americans tried to assimilate them into their society, by forcing them to learn â€Å"white† customs and language but also how to be civil, basically stripping them from all of their customs and traditions. An Indian chief exclaims, â€Å"The Great Spirit raised both the white man and the Indian. I think he raised the Indian first. He raised me in this land, it belongs to me. The white man was raised over the great waters, and his land is over there. Since they crossed the sea, I have given them room. There are now white people all about me. I have but a small spot of land left. The Great Spirit told me to keep it. (7)He expresses the great deal of loss him and the rest of the Indians had to go through because of the Americans and their â€Å"right† to the land. This also was a problem during the period where America tried to settle California and the Californios were killed right on the spot if they did anything to protect their land. Also during the beginning of the slogan many Whigs, or a member of a U. S. political party formed in opposition to the Democratic Party and favored high tariffs and a weak presidency, condemned the idea of manifest destiny stating that the moves for expansion were unprincipled and made the Americans look greedy. Overall these ideas contributed to the side of manifest destiny that is often overlooked, but influenced American history greatly. Manifest Destiny definitely played an important role throughout history. It controlled Americas destiny and was responsible for mans travels throughout history. With this said, America would not be America without the great idea of Manifest Destiny. The philosophy that was built off of manifest destiny gave Americans the drive and force that expansionists everywhere used to justify territorial growth. Some used the idea of Manifest Destiny as a political philosophy stressing democratic institution and social stability, while others used it as a simple reason to explore new lands, or that it was God’s plan. Manifest Destiny was responsible for creating American history. Without it, American territory would be as big as the property surrounding its first settlement. It was the movement responsible for American Expansion. Because of the idea of Manifest Destiny, Americas drive to explore and conquer new lands will never die.

South Africa South Africa is a place of hurt, heart, and change. Over the years, South Africa has either been through rough times in the traditional tribal part, or being descriminated because of their color of skin. South Africa has two major tribal groups; The Nguni/South Ndebele, and the khoi/San. The South Ndebele, together with the Zulu, Xhosa and Swazi, belong to the South Nguni ethnic group. In the case of the South African Ndebele group, the area is the Southern part of South Africa. Here, they have lived, worked on farms, and hunted for generations. They are a very communal tribe. They work together, share together, help each other out, and hunt with each other. This group is very dependent on all of their family. On the other hand the Khoi/San group is the complete opposite of the Nguni/South Ndebele. They live in the Kalahari Desert, they are Nomadic, and rely on livestalk to live. They might be more Independent then the Nguni, but they still get alittle help from their families too. Like they go hunting together. Unlike the Nguni the Khoi/San use poisoned arrows to kill their livestalk.Little did these groups know what they were going to be going through the next 300 years; colonialism. In 1652 South Africa was forever changed when Dutch established a rest stop in South Africa.Apartheid also unofficially started. At that time, the area was occupied by the Khoi/San clans. The pressure on the Khoi/San increased as more Dutch and French settlers arrived. By the 18th century, most Khoi/San had lost their land to these European settlers. Cape Town became a major port as a way station for the Europeans. The colonists were mostly farmers and cattle herders. They became known as the Boers. They developed their own culture and language (Afrikaans). In the 1770's, the Boers encountered the Bantu, who were migrating. The Nguni Bantu clans settled between the Drakensberg Mountains and the sea. The Sotho clans settled in the interior, north of the Cape Colony. The 19th century competition for land led to the conflict between the Bantu clans, which led to the boer war, 1899-1902. Hundreds and thousands died during the wars, entire clans disappeared and it resulted in the creation of many Bantu nations. Now they are unable to communicate with each other, and now they don't have any power to stop the Europeans. British forces twice occupied the Cape region, in 1795 and 1806. In 1814, toward the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Great Britain purchased the Cape Colony from the Dutch for 6 million Britidh pounds. After 1820 thousands of British colonists arrived in South Africa, and they demanded that English law be imposed. English became the official language in 1822. The Khoi/San were given protection, and slavery was abolished in 1833. When the Dutch, or the Afrikanns found out that slavery was ebolished they got angry, because they thoght that the Bilble said that black people were supposed to be slaves, which then created the Boer war. It is now 1948, the Europeans have now taken over South Africa. Four Years earlier a man named Nelson Mandela became a lawyer, and joined the A.N.C. so he could help the salvaging African people. Even though he played a very important roll in Apartheid, colonialism, and their human rights, that still didn't stop the Europeans from torturing them for the next 46 years. Nelson Mandela was a nice man, but in 1956 Mandela went on trial for treason, but was acquitted in 1961. During this time he married Nkosikazi Nomzamo Madikizela. He was again arrested in August of 1962, he was sentenced to five years in prison. While in prison, Mandela, along with several others, was convicted of sabotage and treason and in June 1964 was sentenced to life imprisonment. During this period Mandela became a worldwide symbol of resistance to white domination in South Africa. In prison he acted nice to everybody. When an Officer told him to do something, he politely answered Yes sir, but he did this for a reason. He did that so the officers could feal the guilt for what they have been doing to all the black people. The goverment soon got pressured by the people to let

But with David Fincher casting his creepy spell over Gillian Flynns breakaway thriller, it looks like Gone Girl  might just defy the odds. Check it out below: The cast includes Ben Affleck as Nick Dunne, Rosamund Pike as his missing wife Amy, Tyler Perry as the lawyer Tanner Bolt, and Neil Patrick Harris as the waspy Desi Collings. The movie is directed by David Fincher, of The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and House of Cards fame. (Hes also directed some Nine Inch Nails music videos, and if thats not a pedigree for eerie film making, I dont know what is.) Fans of the book will recognize key points in the trailer that show how closely the movie will align with the novel: Amy and Nicks big fight before her disappearance, the mounting evidence discovered in their house, Nicks  disastrous press conference, the abandoned mall, the discovery in the basement aaahhh! Id better stop myself before I give it all away! Anyway, the studios thankfully left the screenplay in Gillian Flynns hands, so much of the integrity of the book should remain  the same. Effect of Flexible Working Hours on Motivation INTRODUCTION As this is the research methods assignment so I did research on my selected topic which is Do flexible work timings increase the morale and motivation levels of employees? and come to know with different findings that what are the advantages and disadvantages of flexible working hours, and what other peoples opinion regarding that etc. So this research project put out to inspect the spirits and motivation levels of employees. On the basis of pilot sample evidence, it is seen that most employees would want to work in flexible timings and feel highly motivated when given the opportunity to do so. As flexible working hours is an advantage for many workers, which can help an organization to keep and retain its good and effective employees. Flextime can also enable workers to become more creative by organizing their work days around personal needs. No doubt that many firms are allowing its employees flextime and also keeping record for this, but some of the organization have core working hours for example, from 09:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an hour off for lunch. These core hours vary widely from company to company and industry to industry. Flextime employees are given the opportunity to schedule their additional working hours from 05:00 a.m. to 09:00 p.m. for example with at least eight total working hours a day or hours given by company. It can also be beneficial for parents who are working and want to spend a time each day with their children. Many employees foundd that their productivity can increase by setting flexible hours, which may enable them to work for calm time in early morning or evening. Some telephone salespersons, such as, may find that they have more success working late into the evening, rather than being forced to work during normal daytime hours. Some software engineers, research staff, or other people may feel that working late into the night is best for them as late night they can do better because that time they can do their work without any interruption. One of the key to successful flextime scheduling is to determine in advance all employees weekly or monthly schedules. Clearly, a company cant function if everyone is gone at the same time every day. Managers need to work out best possible flexible time schedules with employees, adjusting individual needs with overall company requirements. In todays rigid labor market, many types of businesses can offer flexible scheduling as a benefit to applicants. Research Objective This research study is trying to determine the benefits derived due to the preface of flexible working hours amongst the employees. To determine whether implementing flexible work timings will be impact on the self-esteem of employees motivation levels of employees. To address this issue, companies have introduced flexible working hours for employees. Flexible timings ensure that employees continue to maintain their productive hours, as expected from them at their own comfort. Employees are expected to put in a certain number of productive hours per week and hence they have the comfort of logging in these hours at their own discretion. In our case, Flexible timing is the independent variable and Motivation level and the Morale of employees are the dependent variables. The relation between the two is the effect of flexible timings on the motivation level / morale of the employees. There is no moderating variable in this case which in any affects the relationship between the independent variable and dependent variable. Second is Alternative hypothesis (H1) is alternative hypothesis is alternative hypothesis which holds that there has been a change. Testing of hypothesis can be explained as a six steps process Establishing a null hypothesis Choosing the statistical test on the basis of assumption about the population distribution and measurement level select the desired level of significance Parametric and non parametric tests are applicable under various conditions like parametric operates with the interval and ratio data and are preferred when their assumptions can be met. Non parametric tests do not require stringent assumptions about the population distribution and are less useful with less nominal and ordinal values. Before we start our research, based on our problem statement, we have come with the following hypotheses: 1.  Null Hypothesis: H0= Flexible timings do not have any effect on employee morale. The process of designing a research study involves many interrelated decisions. The measurement of processes of learning and the evaluation of the outcomes of the teaching-learning process have always posed major problems in research design. This is especially true where the desired outcomes are broadly defined as changes in interpersonal behavior: a complex of knowledge, values, perceptions, and behavioral skills. One purpose of this paper is to provide investigators with a review of the methodological problems involved in planning and conducting such studies. Unlike much research in the behavioral sciences which is primarily intelligible and of interest only to other researchers, research on human relations training is frequently written for and read by administrators and practitioners who may base action decisions on the findings. Their need is for guidelines which will aid them in evaluating the soundness of research reports and their applicability to practical decisions on the planning and conduct of training. It should make enough provision for protection against bias and must maximize reliability. The design must be rigid and not flexible. Data collection techniques: The data of our research is collected in a survey is just like by filling up a questionnaire from 30  selected respondents, also the research is going to be conducted in natural environment where work proceeds normally. This research is a mix of both qualitative and quantitative research methods since we are going to use current statistics from previous researches and we have also conducted a survey of Employees on how their behave before and after Training and Development. There are 10 questions in each questionnaire. Population The population of this research are randomly chosen Employee of different age who are working in an organization. Random sampling technique is used to make sure we dont cherry pick our respondents. And the Targeted population is the employee of Tech pack Company. Once the pilot data is gathered, we will use Microsoft Excel sheet to calculate the sample size. After the information has been composed from a representative sample of the population, the next step is to analyze the research hypothesis. Firstly the data i.e. the questionnaires would be checked for completeness and the wherever data is incomplete attempts will be made to get it filled up / or get it discarded. Then the data will be coded using the following formats:- Wherever the response to the question would indicate Yes /No we will use 1 for Yes and 2 for No In case of questions using the Likert scale, we will use the following coding convention Strongly Agree Agree Neutral Disagree Strongly Disagree This coding will be useful in analyzing the data using tools like Microsoft Excel. Frequency distributions of the supposed variables of interest will be obtained. illustration displays like histograms, bar charts would be constructed. Below is a sample of the frequency distribution, which would be obtained with pilot data using Excel. FINDINGS Tentatively this research study seeks to examine the effects of flexible work timings on the employees morale and motivation levels. Based on similar studies done in the past we are likely to conclude that:- Many employees would want the option of flexible work timings. This is because of the changing work environment. Today many people are working more than 60 hours a week instead of the regular 48 hours. This leads to increased stress levels. Working patterns have changed drastically too as workers in service industries such as banks, insurance companies and supermarkets increasingly have to be available to offer 24-hour services to the consumer. Similarly public sector workers are increasingly expected to provide services beyond the traditional 9am to 5pm day. Also more and more employees are becoming aware of flexible working arrangements. It is expected that females would be more likely than men to request for flexible work timings. This is because increasing numbers of women with young children are in work. In two-thirds of families both parents now work outside the home, up from under a half in the 1980s. Women with children under 6 are more likely to request for flexible timings. Meeting childcare needs would be expected to be the most common reason given by employees for requesting to work flexibly, particularly women. Since today many couples with small children are working in organizations, this leaves them with little time to take care of their little ones. If there is no one at home to take care of the children, then either one of them has to take leave to take care of the young one, or the kid is left in a daycare centre. By opting for flexible work timings, this situation can be managed easily with one of the partners staying back. Most of the employees would agree that an employee would be greatly motivated if given the chance to work in flexible timings. Flexible work timings enable an employee to balance his work life and personal life. It is  because of this that he tends to have lesser stress levels and feels good about his organizations caring approach. Hence the degree of motivation in greatly enhanced. When asked most of the employees would agree that an employee tends to be more productive to the organization if he / she are working in flexible timings. In flexible timings the employee can work at his own comfort level and at his discretion, which allows him greater control over his life. This greatly help to increase the productivity of the employee in his organization. It is expected that the majority of the employees would agree that an employee tends to be more committed to the organization if he/she is working in flexible timings. Due to the greater flexibility provided in flexible work timings, the employee feels a greater  sense of commitment to his organization. This is because h feels that the organization is doing a lot to help him, so in turn he / she should also give the same back to his organizations. Many of the employees would agree that an employees morale is higher when he/she are working in flexible timings. The morale of an employee is directly related to his motivation level. If the employee feels  greatly motivated, his / her morale will be greatly boosted and this helps the organization to a great deal. Much of the employees would agree that flexible timings help to a great extent in retention of employees. Because employees would have the option of flexible timings, they tend to have a great  attachment level to the organization. They would not readily leave the organization. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS This study is about to cover a bright picture of flexible working for the employees. There are some pros and cons of flexible working hours, but any how the advantages are more than disadvantages. As full time flexibility leads to complexity in the organization which will lead to destruction and loss of the company, it can be mangeable for employees but May there is no control of work between them. As a consequence it leaves many of the employees within the organization feeling unhappy about their work, life and balance in both of them. It depends on the employer how they design jobs and recruit for retaining something. And these findings do not implement on IT sector as IT sector is facing a number of such things as challenges such as: Unauthentic evidence Need to move for a narrow commitment Need to tackle different things like attitudes and behaviours Align promotion and reward on the basis of full time basis or part time basis This research study easily suggests that IT sector no doubt IT sector had taken first steps on creating a role of flexible working but they still need to be ensure their future competitiveness and success. RECOMMENDATIONS According to my point of view there are different recommendations for flexible hours, some of them are stated below: Design appropriate flexible working options It means that designing such a flexible working which is convenient for employees as well as for employer, it up to the individual agreement and proper planning. Time and scheduled everything should be pre-planned. Organizations should clearly mentione tha what is suitable and not suitable for flexible working hours for individual roles. Support managers to carry out flexible work options for employees One of the biggest obstacle to modify may be the attitude and perception of middle managers and line mangers. Organization often undervalues the degree to which these groups may feel destabilized and threatened by the need to change working practices. In particular, successful managers, who have built a strong high-performing teams on the basis of usual full-time, face to face collaboration in the office, are likely to regard new forms of flexible work, particularly remote working, as both undermining the foundations of their teams success. So these mangers should provide their concerns for working differently and trained them as they begin to focus on managing employees by their output and results. Providing difficult careers with promotion opportunities for those wishing to work flexibly The shade of career death is probably one of the major single barrier to the wider adoption of flexible working practices. Employees working flexibly need to be granted full citizenship rights at work, in terms of access to training, promotion and progression opportunities. Comparing and Contrasting Tragic Heroes †Oedipus and Prufrock Essay

Introduction: Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (1896 –1940) the Irish American novelist and short story writer of the twentieth century said â€Å"Show me a hero and I will write you a tragedy†(as quoted in memorablequotations.com). Indeed more often than not, great tragedies of yore were always centered round the deeds or the misdeeds of a hero (usually a man of noble birth) his misfortunes and the cursed nature of his life, fated to suffer and fall from glory. The concepts of heroes and heroism have themselves undergone vast changes from Sophocles’ (496-406 B.C) times. Consequently, the idea of hero-based tragedy indeed, even the basic traits of heroism has undergone transformation. As against the noble-born, valorous hero of Sophocles and Aristotle (in The Poetics of 30 B. C.), the common man who struggles to make a decent living, and fulfill ordinary aspirations such as wanting to be loved, given affection, loyalty, friendship etc, in a mundane, mechanized, and mad-after-money world (bereft of human values) – his life has become the focus of the twentieth century tragedies. This essay, shall take two characters, Oedipus – the King (425 B.C), in the ancient drama of Sophocles, and J. Alfred Prufrock, in the twentieth century poet T.S. Eliot’s (1888 –1965) â€Å"Love song of J. Alfred Prufrock† (1915), and analyze their similarities and dissimilarities, with a brief definition of Tragic Hero as given by Sophocles, and the definition of a Tragic Hero in modern times. Definitions with illustrations of Tragic Heroes – Ancient and Twentieth Century: First, the idea of a tragic hero, in the ancient times shall be discussed.   Aristotle, who was a great Greek philosopher and thinker, stipulated a couple of traits as absolutely necessary for a tragic hero: he must be noble origin, or at least possess a noble spirit, and he must be the cause of his own suffering. Aristotle (384-322 B.C), quoting the character of Oedipus depicted by Sophocles, laid down certain rules that a tragic hero must possess: a leader who is filled with good and bad elements – Oedipus was of noble birth and had many noble characters like wanting redeem his kingdom from the plague, but he also was too proud etc; he is ignorant of his imminent fall, though the audience have prior knowledge of it – in case of Oedipus the audience had prior knowledge of his birth and identity, while he considers himself the son of Polybus, the king of Corinth; his inherent flaw or â€Å"hamartia† is the cause of his fall – his belief that he can over come the prophecy that he will kill his father; suffers isolation because of this – self-exile from Corinth; suffering is irreversible – the blinding he causes to himself later; undergoes punishment because of his own pride or â€Å"hubris† – Oedipus pursues the killer of King Laius, despite counsel against it; a misguided sense of heroism, wherein he is prepared to take on the guilt of the state or kingdom on himself – his belief that he can somehow overcome the prophecy of the oracle by leaving his parents; resulting in greater conflict with fate – Oedipus finally goes to Thebes and killed his own father, without knowing who the latter was, thereby fulfilling the oracle; a restoration of balance to the original state of social harmony through cleansing of pity and fear – Oedipus undertakes to go away in exile which was the punishment he had ordered for the killer of the previous king handing over the kingdom to Creon; which he called â€Å"catharsis† or â€Å"tragic satisfaction† (adapted from Allingham, 2002:1). Thus Oedipus exactly fits the role with of a tragic hero, as laid down by Aristotle. Coming to modern tragic hero of the twentieth century, as mentioned earlier, has come a long way from the stipulations of the ancients for tragic-heroism.   Daniel J. Boorstin (1914 –2004), an American writer, and the Librarian of Congress, talks of the heroes of the modern world as being â€Å"anonymous† and â€Å"the unsung hero: †¦ the honest cop, the hard worker at lonely, underpaid, unglamorous, unpublicized jobs† (as in memorablequotations.com). A modern tragic hero may described as someone who does not hold any of the ancient lofty ideals, rather as an ordinary man who is disillusioned with the ruthless world around him and is not able to come to terms with it and suffers thereby with a feeling of helplessness, and is unable to realize his full potential because of this. Typically, he is subjected to moods, driven by extreme happiness or plunged into extreme sorrow, very sophisticated, filled with doubts, lives in the crowded cities yet suffers desperately from isolation, smart yet sensitive, and often disillusioned to such an extent that he feels life itself has lost all meaning or relevance to him. Eliot’s Prufrock, typically suffers all these qualities. For example, he is always filled with self-doubt, â€Å"a deep phobia of life, turning into what one could perhaps best describe as complete biological defeatism† (Mirsky, undated). He seems to be the very best representation of so many negative attributes, like procrastination, indecision, doubts, frustration that reflects the impotent helplessness of the modern, urban man. The first few lines in the poem are from Dante’s Inferno, which is used as a prelude, to show that Prufrock, the protagonist is already doomed and is voicing out his thoughts because he is so sure that no-one is hearing them. The poem describes the innermost feelings, extremely tortured with a wanting, to disclose his love to his chosen woman, but prevented from self-doubt, and fear, phobia, â€Å"Do I dare / Disturb the universe?† (Eliot, lines 44-45), because he only knew too well the out come of such expression â€Å"That is not what I meant at all† (Eliot, line 97). The vivid description of the places, possibly his dwelling place, reflects the sordid state in which the typical twentieth century man lived, and the isolation he felt â€Å"of lonely men in shirt-sleeves† (Eliot, line 73). Eliot’s Prufrock, ultimately fails even to begin his proposal to his lady love, because he could not muster the courage to do it, with a premonition of failure overcoming him and, grows old, suffering life-long loneliness. In a sense this defeatism, is his flaw that proves to be the cause of his woes. He claims that he is not â€Å"Prince Hamlet† (Eliot, line 111), referring to the Shakespearean tragic hero, implying his lack of royal lineage, but the irony is that he is, in fact exactly like Hamlet, who by postponing his decision avenge his father’s death, by killing kill Claudius, leads to the death of many others, and finally his own. All this prove that, he does conform to the image of a twentieth century tragic-hero. Comparing and Contrasting, the two tragic heroes: One similarity between the two characters that strikes a literature student immediately is that, both Oedipus and Prufrock, actually are depicted as surviving long into old age, despite all their sadness and failures and disillusionment. Almost as if to chew cud, ruminate all that had gone by and to die a slow painful death of their miserable actions; misguided in Oedipus’ case, â€Å"Woe, woe, and woe again! / How through my soul there darts the sting of pain, / The memory of my crimes† (Sophocles, lines 1372-74) and inactions in the case of Prufrock, â€Å"I grow old† (Eliot, line 120). Both, ultimately realize their folly, or flaw, but are helpless to reverse the situation. In Prufrock’s case, he is entirely the cause of his own suffering, but still is impotent to change the situation. Both despise themselves for their helplessness. Thus, their sufferings seem amplified and add to the brooding quality of their tragic lives. Both are isolated and are despised by the world, in their thinking. Prufrock states that he doesn’t think that the mermaids will sing to him; Oedipus begs to be led away hurriedly, being the most polluted of all, and â€Å"Of all men most accursed† (Sophocles, line1396). Though the two characters share the above stated common traits and both are tragic heroes, there are quite a few dissimilarities too. The first difference is the form of portrayal of the tragic heroes. Oedipus is the hero of the dramatic form, and hence his character is more clear and open to study, presenting a fuller picture of all his characteristic traits and complex behavior. Prufrock, on the other hand is neither a king, nor of noble thinking, and he is the tragic hero in a poem. Implicitly, the shortage of space in a poem puts limitations on extensive character portrayal of the hero. Thus, the student is able to study only a portion of the character’s life-span of Prufrock, in contrast to the full life history of Oedipus. The other most striking contrast is that Oedipus is an ancient tragic hero – actively upholding the principles of high idealism, altruism, justice, and valor while being beleaguered by feelings of jealousy, treachery, disloyalty, dishonor, greed, lust for power etc, the modern,   tragic-hero is more of an anti-hero, and impotent. In the sense, he is so defeated by the power of the dull, uninspiring world around him, that he prefers to rather remain inactive, than to actively try to change his situation and be defeated. It is almost as if the uselessness of the attempts of the ancient tragic heroes have been embedded in the collective psyche of the modern tragic hero, and hence, he is already aware of the outcome, he doesn’t even want to attempt. Oedipus not being aware of his true identity, led him to wrongly believe that Polybus was his father, and thereafter his vow never to return to Corinth. But still he, as the mark of a true hero took an action of self-exile which ultimately led to fructify the designs of fate. Nevertheless, he was action-oriented and defeated. Whereas, the modern tragic hero in Prufrock, is so much a pessimist, that he remains defeated with inaction – by sheer preference. In fact, it is said that T.S. Eliot was reflecting on the dismal conditions of the world surrounding him, and this poem partially paved the way for his other later works like The Wasteland (1922). The differing time-periods of the two characters have resulted in the portrayal of the different societies in which these two heroes lived. For example, the people of the land of Thebes have been represented as the Chorus, and they are actively involved in the happenings of the state, the king and the welfare of the state, showing a healthy environment; whereas, the desolate depiction of the twentieth century environment, in Eliot’s poem is more dismal, and uninspiring. It seems the society as a common force had died out, or at least not visible. Conclusion: The tragic heroes Oedipus and Prufrock belong to totally different ages; consequently, present entirely different set of traits and ideals by which they are depicted. Franklins Plan essays Benjamin Franklin is known by almost every American as a great and significant part of the history of the United States. Franklin is considered The First American, not only because of his quest for Americas freedom, but for his numerous scientific accomplishments, his politics, and his publications. A large part of Franklins fame comes from his plan of self-improvement and his concept of living deliberately. Although he his is thought of as a hero in many peoples eyes, there are stills many people who feel Franklin was just a great citizen. A critic by the name of D.H Lawrence feels pretty passionately about this. To explore Franklin as an enlightenment figure, and his plan on self-improvement, a person must listen to Lawrences critisism. To understand Franklins self-improvement we must understand what he is trying to accomplish. He created a list of four resolutions to follow. He resolved to become more frugal so that he could save enough money to repay what he owed to others. He decided that he would be very honest and sincere "in every word and action." He promised himself to be industrious "to whatever business I take in hand." Lastly he vowed "to speak ill of no man whatever, not even in a manner of truth" and to "speak all the good I know of every body." From these resolutions Franklin created a list of thirteen virtues, which he followed systematically. These virtues if used properly were supposed to make him efficient and give him an edge in his business. Franklin makes presuppositions regarding our capacities to control our own lives. He suggests that everyone has the ability to analyze, and control the way they think and react to different situations. This is done by practicing his list of virtues, which in turn will make them habit and the virtues can be applied sub-consciously. Debate Paper on the Welfare Act Essay In 1996, in order to fulfill his campaign promise to end welfare as we know it President Bill Clinton signed the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA), as a result both the fabric and management of the national welfare system were altered. With any policy change comes conflict in the form of opposing perspectives, and the two conflicting viewpoints that will be discussed for the basis of this paper were induced as a result of the enacted PRWORA. Michael Tanner, the first author to be discussed within this paper defended the belief that the alterations to welfare reform achieved desirable results. Author Stephen Pimpare, the voice of the opposition, blasts the PRWORA and its aftereffect. Michael Tanner discussed, how the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) has been the catalyst for the decline of poverty in the United States. Tanner began his argument by accenting the opposition of many American liberals, that anticipated that the passage of this bill would bare cataclysmic results such as, forcing families into absolute poverty. Through the use of statistical data, Tanner discussed how a decade later, the results of the aforesaid bill have proven to be quite opposite of the conjecture. Comparatively, Stephen Pimpare sought to discuss, how the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) has come to fail the recipients that it was originally intended to benefit. Pimpare admits that although, the number of welfare recipients were reduced, there has not been enough substantial evidence to indicate that this was, as a result of welfare reform. Instead, Pimpare believes that the decline in poverty was attributed to forces unrelated to the enactment of the PRWORA. Although, poverty declined in the mid-1990s, he affirms that it is on the rise once more and in large part due to welfare reform. Pimpare continues his argument by making the struggles of former welfare recipients a focal point. By encouraging employment among the poor, the PRWORA placed a work requirement, and a five year lifetime cap on cash assistance, which Pimpare believes has made the lives of those that left welfare, particularly single mothers, that much harder. He more or less explains that under the policies of the PRWORA the federal governments attempt at bringing an end to welfare meant giving states more control over program requirements; doing away with previous federal matching funds, and reducing the incentives for bringing in new welfare recipients. According to Pimpare, without these incentives and the increased authority given to states, many now delegate their allotments for the use of programs or budget deficits that are unrelated to the welfare expenses for which, the funding was initially intended, and the few states that do invest funds into welfare related programs do so by contracting private organizations. Each author agrees that there has been reductions in welfare rolls, but neither believe that this decline occurred for the same reasons. Michael Tanner asserts throughout his article that rolls declined in large part as a result of the PRWORA; giving only slight praise to economic growth. Tanner believes that this among other factors are an effective appraisal of the PRWORAs overall success. Although, Stephen Pimpare also acknowledges cuts in the rolls, he denies that the PRWORA was the influence. He credits the diminishment of the rolls to the decline of unemployment and higher wages. He affirms that if it had not been for the implementation of welfare reform, poverty would have been substantially lower then it was. An additional point, addressed by both authors, is how former welfare recipients have fared beyond their enrollment under the enacted PRWORA. Each side of the opposition maintains that the effects of the welfare reform have bared either negative or positive consequences. Tanner stated that although, many individuals who left welfare, as a result of the PRWORA, have only acquired full time, entry level positions, paying an average of $16,000 per year, it was progress and far better then where those individuals once were. He adds, that while these individuals take on menial employment, they are in turn, gaining valuable experience that will provide them with marketable skills for higher earnings in the future. In Pimpares article, he argues that the PRWORA has ultimately, had adverse effects on the lives of former recipients. He states that homelessness is at an all time high. According to Pimpare, more then half of former recipients remain in poverty, and around 60 percent were unemployed upon there completion of the welfare program. He adds, that poor women, a population that dominates the overall pool of welfare recipients, have become no more autonomous following the welfare reform, then they were previously. Historically, there have been generations of conflict concerning the welfare of the impoverished, and the overall tone of both articles are no exception. Each article, exemplified the current state of conflict. Within our course we have examined this shift of ideology, throughout various periods of time. Historical occurrences, from one era to the next have acted as the catalyst for the fluctuation of the perceived accountability for the poor. The view of personal versus social responsibility has shaped the response to social welfare policies. The retrenchment was a period marked by the relinquishment of responsibility to the individual, and the PRWORA was to be the means of supporting this return of autonomy to the poor. It has been sixteen years since the PRWORA took its place amongst government legislation, and the lives of its former recipients have shifted during this lapse in time, but has welfare reform changed their lives for better or for worse? Did the lunatic right accurately predict the welfare leavers destinies, or were the liberal prophets of doom correct? I strongly believe, that in order to form an educated rebuttal against the opposition, one should have a clear understanding of the vantage point that they wish to support, as well as, of the one that they wish to dismiss. After, thoroughly examining each viewpoint of the welfare reform quarrel, I believe that I am fully informed enough to take the side of most American liberals. Since, its enactment in 1996, the PRWORA has increased the power of the states, but has done very little to increase the livelihood of those who stood to benefit from it. I am sure in hindsight, the PRWORA seemed like a good idea, but it turned out to be fundamental flawed. Since its passage, single parents have been unable to adequately provide for their families. While, many former welfare recipients have managed to attain employment, a scant amount have actually evaded the reality of poverty. The rise in employment is parallel with the increased presence of single mothers, who have entered the labor force, which can clearly be attributed to welfare reform. The vast majority of former welfare recipients, who have entered the work force are only earning between $10,000 and $16,000 annually, this is substantially lower then the amount a family realistically requires to obtain lifes basic necessities. The impractical expectation of welfare reform were that these individuals would eventually climb the job ladder out of menial, entry level positions, but I am not so naive and simple-minded as to agree. History has offered insight into such situations, thus wages remain stagnant for less educated workers, and being employed does not automatically absolve a person from impoverishment. On a positive note, more monies have been earmarked for child care agendas, but difficulties still persist. Single parents continue to receive less support to work. Federal and state programs extend to few families that require child care. Head Start serves less than half of eligible children (Blank, Schulman, and Ewen 1999). The quality of child care is insufficient, as a result of low wages for child care workers. An additional problem is that, although former recipients have obtained employment, they have in turn, been left unable to afford healthcare. Many are not offered such benefits through their employers, and become excluded from government funded health coverage, due to there inability to adhere to the maximum wage requirements. While I am sure the debate over welfare reform will persist long after this assignment has been submitted, it is still worth mentioning how fundamentally backwards the passage of the PRWORA was. Although, it has succeeded in pushing individuals off of the rolls, it has failed to pull them out of poverty, and it is for this reason that I must assent with Pimpares argument. What quality of life do people have when they must survive on the bare minimum? I can make little sense of a government that would allow its citizens to continue living in poverty. The PRWORA does not offer the opportunity for betterment and empowerment, it guarantees a life of struggle.
